Chapter 16: The Inn
The private dining room at the Millbrook Inn had a long table, a projector and a plate of tiny sandwiches nobody was eating.
Wendell stood at the screen with a clicker.
Seven men and two women in good coats sat around the table, and they were already nodding.
"Baskin Commons," he was saying, "forty-two units on eleven acres, with a bell tower as the amenity."
The slide behind him showed my playground with a swimming pool on it.
Mal pushed the door open without knocking.
He wore Tania's charcoal suit and no tie, and I walked in beside him with my cardigan buttoned to the neck.
Tania followed us in and sat down at the foot of the table as if she had been asked.
Wendell's thumb stopped on the clicker.
"This is a closed meeting," he said.
"We're the amenity," I said. "I thought we should say hello."
A man near the head of the table, in his fifties with thin gray hair, was staring at Mal.
