Chapter 17: Missed Payment
Ruthanne had the bank on the phone before I got my coat off.
She sat at her front office desk with her reading glasses pushed into her perm and her butterscotch untouched.
"Eleven forty this morning," she said, with the receiver against her chest.
"A transfer out of operating, signed by the chair."
"Thirty-one thousand and change sat in that account Thursday night. Now it holds eight dollars."
"Where did it go?"
"Into something called the Baskin Foundation holding account. He calls it safekeeping."
"Can they reverse it?"
"Not without the chair's signature, and not by noon tomorrow."
She hung up.
Her hands were trembling, and Ruthanne's hands had never trembled in thirty-one years.
Mal stood in the doorway with his arms folded.
I had never seen him so still.
"Don't," I said.
"I haven't said a word."
"You're about to say a number."
"I'm about to say I'll stand here and do whatever you ask me to do, and nothing else."
I looked at him.
