Chapter 16: Pickup Line

I crossed Fifth Avenue without looking at the traffic.

Daphne did not move.

She stood on the sidewalk in the brown coat, and she held the paper bag out to me.

"It's a toy," she said. "For the boy."

"Get away from this school."

"I'm on a public sidewalk."

"Then stay on it."

I took the bag from her, because I wanted it out of her hand.

Inside was a stuffed stegosaurus with a blue ribbon around its neck, and a card in green ink.

*Call me. We should talk. D.*

I put the card in my pocket and gave the dinosaur to the teacher at the gate.

"Please keep this in the office," I said. "Nobody gives it to him."

Daphne watched me do it.

"You're very sure of yourself," she said.

"I'm very sure of him."

She turned and walked away down the hill, and her shoes made no sound at all.

I did not go to work.

I called the catering agency and told them I was sick, which was true, and I sat in a coffee shop two doors down from the school with my phone face up on the table.

At two forty-five I walked back and stood at the fence.

I had been wrong to relax, and I knew it.
