Chapter 15: The Test

Oma's kitchen was warm and smelled of cloves.

She shut the swinging door, hooked her cane on a chair and put both hands flat on the table.

"I'm going to say something, and you will not like it," she said.

"All right."

"I believe you."

I had been braced for the other thing.

My knees nearly went.

"You do?"

"I watched your face when he said sterile. A liar looks at the person she's lying to. You looked at my grandson."

"Then why did you send the ladies away?"

"Because belief is not enough for a vote."

She lowered herself into a chair.

"On January sixth my son will have lawyers in that room, and the lawyers will say my mind is going."

"They'll say a foolish old woman gave thirty-four percent of a company to a nobody's child."

"You're not a nobody."

"I know that, and so do you, and a judge will not."

She folded her small hands.

"I want a paper, Hanna. A blood test, taken at ten weeks. It can be done from your arm and a swab from Matthias."

"It says who the father is, and nobody can argue with a lab."

I thought of the doctor on Prospect Avenue and her kind face.

I thought of a photograph taken through glass with a long lens.

"Ten weeks is December nineteenth," I said.

"You've counted."

"I count everything. It's my job."
