Chapter 24: The Water
The dock at the foot of the hundred and ten steps had been scrubbed for summer.
Somebody had come down in the week and sanded the planks, and the cedar sauna on its ledge of rock smelled of fresh oil.
The ice hole was gone.
The lake had closed over it weeks ago, and there was only black water moving under the dock now.
It lay open to the horizon.
I stood at the end of the planks at dusk in my bare feet, with the wind off the lake in my hair.
I had come down the stair ahead of him.
He had let me.
The sun was going behind the hill, and the water ran from copper to rose to the deep blue that comes before black.
Out past the shipping lane a laker was crossing, small and slow, with her lights coming on.
I heard him on the stair behind me.
His boots were slow and even on the wood, and I did not turn.
He came down the dock and stopped three feet away.
"It's cold," Stellan said.
"It's May," I said.
"The water will be thirty-eight degrees."
"I know what it will be," I said.
I took off my coat and let it fall on the planks.
I took off my sweater and my jeans and my underwear.
I stood naked on the end of his dock in the dusk with the wind on every inch of me.
