Chapter 9: Park Point
Stellan was waiting in the lot at the Hillside House when I came off shift at dawn.
He sat in the black truck with the engine running and the heater off, alone, and he did not get out.
I walked across the ice with my bag over my shoulder and the dying man's words in my ears.
*The man with the ring gave me his coat.*
I had not slept in thirty hours.
I opened the passenger door and climbed in.
"Where's Joel?" I asked.
"I sent him home," Stellan said.
"Why?"
"Because I wanted to drive you myself."
He pulled out of the lot and turned toward the lake.
He drove without speaking, past the ore docks, over the canal bridge and out along the long sandbar of Park Point.
The road ran between the lake on one side and the bay on the other, both frozen, both white.
At the far end he stopped the truck in an empty lot and shut off the engine.
The silence rang.
"This is where they found his truck," he said.
"My father's," I said.
"Three days after."
I looked out at the ice and the long gray line of the horizon.
"Say what you brought me here to say," I said.
"I brought you here to ask you something," Stellan said.
"Ask it."
"Why didn't you look for him?"
I turned my head.
He was staring straight ahead through the windshield, with both hands on the wheel.
"Three years," Stellan said. "He's your father. He vanished off the ice, and the whole town said he ran."
