Chapter 20: The Night Before
The night before the founders' dinner, I decided what I would wear.
I laid it on the bed under the lamp in Room 14 and stood looking at it with my hands on my hips.
It was the green wool dress.
My mother had sewn it from a bolt she had saved for twenty years.
She had hemmed it by hand at the kitchen table the August before I left for the two-year college.
I had worn it once, to the lutefisk supper, and I had not known what it was for.
Now I thought I did.
"It's the right green," Halle said from the doorway.
"It's the exact green of every angry woman in a painting."
"You're not funny," I said.
"I'm a little funny," Halle said.
She had come to tell me she was staying at the clinic all night on a double shift.
I knew she was lying, and I let her.
She came over and squeezed my arm.
"I have the recording on two phones and in a cloud," she said.
"I have a printout, too.
"If a meteor hits Founders' Hall, the whole state of Minnesota will still hear her say it."
"Thank you," I said.
"Don't," Halle said.
"I'll cry, and it'll look like a weakness in a nurse."
She went out.
I heard the door shut and her footsteps going away down the barn corridor.
Then the room was quiet.
At nine there were three knocks at the door.
I opened it.
Aksel stood in the corridor in a gray sweater, with a paper bag in one hand.
He looked as though he had been standing out there for some time.
"I brought dinner," he said.
"I can't keep dinner down," I said.
"It's soup," he said.
"The diner made it.
"I can't cook."
I let him in.
