Chapter 15: Daddy
Luz looked at me, then at the blood on her hand, and then at Joaquin's face.
"Okay," she said.
That was all.
She wiped her fingers on her tulle skirt and put her backpack in his lap.
"Can he come to dinner?" she asked me.
"He can come to dinner."
"Can he sit by me?"
"Ask him."
"Sit by me," Luz told her father.
He laughed once, and it came out wet.
Twenty parents looked politely at the sky.
The man bleeding in the gravel lifted my daughter onto his good arm and stood up.
My mother set five places, which meant she had counted the child.
Joaquin sat with a clean bandage under his sleeve and a bag of frozen peas on his cheekbone.
Luz climbed into his lap before the rice came around, and nobody stopped her.
She ate her chicken one-handed with her other fist wound in his shirt.
"Is Daddy staying here?" she asked the table.
My mother passed him a tortilla and said nothing, which was her answer.
"Luz," Joaquin said.
"Mm."
"I want to tell you something true. It's a small true thing, and it's the biggest one I have."
She stopped chewing.
"Before you were born, I helped your mama once, and then I went away."
