Chapter 15: Tea at the Hall

Strandberg Hall rose out of the fir trees in grey stone and old timber, with a long porch and a hundred windows.

I came up in my own beat-up Subaru, with the cedar bead around my neck under my sweater and Anselm's number on a slip in my bra.

He had insisted on waiting at the gate, a mile back, in the Beta's truck.

I had let him, because he'd asked, and not told me to.

Hedda met me on the porch steps in a lavender cardigan and pearls, and kissed the air next to my cheek.

"You came," she said. "I'm so glad."

"You asked."

"I did. Will you give me your phone? We keep a rule at tea. Nothing with a screen at my table."

I gave her the phone, because I had come to hear her out.

Tea was served in a sunroom with white wicker chairs.

Hedda poured with a steady hand and asked about my work, and my back, and my mother.

I understood after ten minutes that she was taking inventory.

"I'd like to show you something," she said.

"I've seen enough of your house."

"Not this part."

She led me up a staircase and down a long corridor with the carpet muffling our steps, to a pair of white doors, and she opened them with both hands.

It was a nursery.

I stopped in the doorway.

It was the loveliest room I had ever seen.

Pale yellow walls, a bank of windows over the firs, a white cradle carved with wolves, a rocking chair with a quilt over the arm.
