Chapter 7: Mummo's Table
Mummo's windows had steamed over by two o'clock on Thanksgiving.
Her frame house in West Duluth smelled of rutabaga laatikko, cardamom and strong coffee.
Mats stood on her porch steps in his good wool coat, holding a store-bought pumpkin pie in both hands.
He carried it very well.
"Don't talk about the baby," I said. "Don't mention it at all."
"I know," he said.
"Don't talk about the clinic."
"I know."
I straightened his collar.
"Don't call her Mummo until she says."
"I wasn't going to," Mats said, and looked a little hurt.
Mummo opened the door in her flowered apron.
She was eighty-four years old and five feet tall, with white hair in a bun.
Her eyes were the pale hard blue of the lake in February.
She looked at Mats for a long moment, from his boots to his silver temples.
