Chapter 22: The Chancellor's Fall

Six guards in gray came off the wall with their halberds lowered.

Lucan stepped in front of me with his arms spread, and I heard the whole gallery stand up.

"Stop," said the queen.

She did not raise her voice, but the cane came down on the dais.

"I am the Queen Mother of Halvery, and the Council's seal does not outrank my consent. Lower your weapons."

The captain looked at Gresham.

Gresham looked at him, and for a heartbeat nobody moved.

Then Princess Ilse of Karsten vaulted over the gallery rail.

She was short and square, and she landed with a thump in the middle of the ring and brushed off her coat.

"Before you arrest anyone," she said, "I would like to refuse something."

Every head turned.

"I am Ilse of Karsten. I am told that I am betrothed to the crown prince of Halvery."

"The contract says my father signed it three years ago. He did not."

"I never agreed to it either, and I would sooner marry a haystack."

"The contract is a forgery. The Chancellor knew it was a forgery, because he was the one who had it made."

She turned to Gresham and looked him up and down.

"My envoy holds a letter dated three weeks before Choosing Night, and my father will read it."
