Chapter 24: The Crown Prince Chose the Size 18 Commoner
The gown was ivory silk with a deep square neck, and not one bone in it.
The dressmaker had cut it to the body I had, as the queen had ordered on the second day.
It skimmed my breasts and followed the curve of my waist and fell from my wide hips in a long, heavy sweep.
Gold lemon blossoms ran up the bodice, stitched by hand, one for each Friday of the year I'd baked without knowing who ate them.
"Breathe," said the dressmaker, round a mouthful of pins. "You have all the room you need."
I breathed.
It was snowing on the morning of my wedding.
Fat white flakes fell past the window of the cathedral vestry, and Pip stood in her bridesmaid's blue, crying and eating a tart.
"Don't get crumbs on the train," I said.
"I'm not crying," said Pip. "It's the lemon."
Rosalind bent to straighten the hem.
She wore a pale blue gown, with her honey braid pinned up under a crown of white winter roses.
She looked up at me and smiled.
"I'm sorry I ever said it was a tent," she said. "It's the most beautiful gown in the kingdom."
"You've already said sorry. Twice."
"I intend to say it every year."
The door opened, and the Queen Mother came in, in black silk and a silver circlet, without her cane.
Her gray eyes went down me, and up, and her mouth did something complicated.
"Oh," said Ottoline Ardenne. "Oh, my girl."
Then she pressed her handkerchief to her face.
