Chapter 13: Ha-rin
Do-gyeom took his eyes off her and looked down the wall at eight hundred men.
"Get off my rampart," he said.
He did not raise his voice.
He never did.
The soldiers went down the stairs without a sound.
"Gwang-ho. The herald waits until dusk. Give him tea and no answer."
"Boss..."
"Tea."
Then he took Ha-rin by the wrist and walked her down the north stairs, through the corridor and up into the room over the gate.
He shut the door and set his back against it.
The red quilt lay as they had left it.
His wedding coat still hung over the chair.
"Tell me," he said.
"Do-gyeom..."
"All of it. Tell me from the first day."
She stood in the middle of the floor with her hands open, and the words came out of her flat and fast.
She told him she was Seo Ha-rin, twenty-six years old, the Crown Princess of Daeyeon.
She told him the carriage in the gorge had been her own doing.
She had thought nobody would ever look.
"Your patrol looked," she said.
"And the Prince's people heard it from the Governor's spies."
"So he has a dead wife and a murderer to hang, and both are true on paper, and I made them."
Her voice cracked on the last word.
"I swore the vow as Han Seol. You promised never to lie to me, and I stood there and let you."
He said nothing.
He stood against the door with his arms at his sides, breathing.
"I'll go," she said. "Tonight. I'll walk out the south gate to the herald and say who I am.
They won't hang your men if the Crown Princess is standing there alive. Let me..."
"Say that again."
