Chapter 8: The Sash
"Sit on the bed," said Ha-rin.
Do-gyeom stood in the doorway of the east tower with the pay chit still in his coat and a hundred questions in his eyes.
"Seol. You said you'd tell me..."
"I said I'd tell you everything."
She locked the door.
"I didn't say when."
She watched him understand it.
His shoulders went loose, slowly, and a strange look crossed his face, half relief and half hunger.
"You're going to make me wait."
"I'm going to make you stop thinking."
He sat on her narrow bed with his hands on his knees.
She pulled the long grey sash from the waist of her Company coat.
It was a strip of strong wool, six feet long.
She wound it once around her fist, and he watched it.
"Take off your coat," she said. "And your shirt. Then lie down."
He did it in half a minute.
He lay back on the pillow, bare to the waist, broad and scarred under her lamp.
The bed looked far too small for him.
The head of the bed was a plain iron rail.
She took his wrists, one in each hand, and drew them above his head.
His pulse beat hard under her thumbs.
"Is this all right?" he said.
"Do you want it to be?"
"I want it more than I can say."
"Then say it."
He swallowed.
"Tie me."
She tied him.
She wound the sash twice around his wrists, passed it behind the rail and knotted it firmly, and tested it with a tug.
It held.
He tested it too, flexing his big arms, and heard the iron creak.
He could have broken it, and they both knew that.
He lay still anyway.
Her whole body hummed.
"You've been giving orders since you were fifteen," she said, standing at the foot of the bed.
