Chapter 20: Both at Once

By the middle of winter, snow lay to the windowsills.

The farmhouse stove ticked and glowed in the corner.

A pot of barley stew sat forgotten on the shelf beside it.

Inside the quilts, nobody was cold.

Rin lay on her side with her head on Kaede's thigh and her braid undone.

Kaede lay on her side facing the other way, with her head on Rin's.

They had meant to sleep.

Then Kaede had turned her head, and kissed the inside of Rin's thigh.

Kaede said into her skin, "I want to do something I've been saving."

"What have you been saving?"

"This. Both of us. At once."

Rin looked down the length of Kaede's strong body, past the curve of her hip, at the thick dark quilt over her.

"I can't think when you do it."

"That's the point."

"I won't last."

"Neither will I."

Rin laughed, soft and breathless, and slid her hands under Kaede's hips.

She tugged the quilt aside.

Kaede lay curled opposite her in the stove's red light, her lashes dark on her cheeks, her thighs parted and wet.

Rin kissed the crease of her thigh.

Kaede's mouth did the same to her, and a shiver ran up Rin's spine.

"On your side," Kaede whispered. "Lift your knee."

Rin lifted her knee, and Kaede slid her face between her thighs.

She felt Kaede's breath first, warm and damp.

Then her tongue, and the whole room went white.

"Oh," Rin said. "Oh."

She forgot what she had planned.

She pushed her face into the soft heat of Kaede and licked, long and slow, and Kaede groaned against her.

The sound traveled straight through her clit.

They moved together, side by side in the nest of quilts.

Kaede's tongue circled and flicked, and Rin's matched it, stroke for stroke.

When Kaede sucked, Rin sucked.

When Rin drew a finger through the wet and pressed it in, Kaede made a high, helpless noise and pushed her hips forward.
