Chapter 11: Mud
Both dogs came out of the Millbrook mud the color of terra-cotta.
It was ten minutes to eight before we got them into his bathtub.
It had rained all night.
The park had turned to red clay.
Waffles had found the deepest part and lay down in it on purpose.
Tank, who has never in his life resisted a good idea, lay down next to her.
"I'll do the big one," Beau said, standing in his bathroom doorway with a hundred pounds of Lab in his arms. "You do yours."
"I'm not getting in the tub."
"You're already covered."
I looked down at myself.
I was wearing leggings and a gray T-shirt, and both were striped with clay to the thighs.
My hair had come out of its claw clip and hung in red-brown strings.
"Fine," I said.
We washed the dogs together.
It took forty minutes and most of a bottle of shampoo, and Waffles howled.
Tank sat in the water and sighed, and Beau got wetter than either of them.
By the end his shirt was stuck to his chest.
The water running down his forearm washed the clay off the cardinal in a red stream, and I stopped scrubbing Waffles to watch it.
"What?" he said.
"Nothing."
"You're staring," he said.
"I'm looking at the bird."
"It's a cardinal," he said.
"I know what it is."
He grinned, and flicked suds at my face, and I flicked them back.
Then we were both laughing, and I had foam in my hair.
He put down the sprayer and took my chin in his wet hand.
"You're covered in mud," he said.
"So are you."
"I think we should get in the shower."
"I think we should get the dogs out of the bathroom," I said, and we did, with towels, and shut them in the kitchen with a bowl of chicken, and came back with the door closed.
