Chapter 15: The Gate

Waffles was dressed as a hot dog, and she was furious about it.

The costume was a felt bun with a stuffed sausage down the middle and a Velcro strap under her belly.

Boyd's text sat in my pocket, Saturday at the park with a lawyer for the dog, and I had decided to dress the dog anyway.

She walked across the gravel lot with her ears flat and her whole body saying that she knew exactly who did this to her.

"You look wonderful," I told her.

She sat down and refused to move.

It was Saturday, the thirty-first, ten to eight.

I had not come on a Saturday since the first one, in September.

I had come because the week had gone the way it had, and I was done pretending it hadn't.

On Monday and Thursday, after the bench, I had sat on my side and Beau had sat on his.

The bench ladies had looked at the sky with great attention for the length of two cups of coffee.

Nobody said a word, which was worse than if they had.

On Thursday the pound-cake lady had said, "Lovely weather," to a sky with no sun in it at all.

I had picked up my dog and left.

I'd gone home to a man in my kitchen who fed me eggs.

I'd realized I was hiding from the one place I wanted to be seen.
