Chapter 18: Rain at the Gate
Vin looked older than he had on the sidewalk.
He'd been standing in a dark storeroom for forty minutes, listening, and it was all over his face.
He didn't look at me.
He looked at Romina.
"Vin." She was off the stool and reaching for him. "Vin, it's not what you think. I was lying to him. I came here for you, to find out what they're planning..."
"Easter," Vin said.
She stopped.
"In white," he said. "You said in white."
"Vin, baby..."
"Get your coat."
She didn't have one.
She'd come in a red dress in October.
He took her by the arm above the elbow, not gently, and walked her to the door.
At the door he stopped and looked back at Kirill.
"Why?" he said. "Why let me hear it?"
"So you'd hear it from her," Kirill said. "And not from me. You wouldn't have believed me."
Vin looked at me then, for one second.
I didn't give him anything to look at.
He went out into the rain with her.
The next morning Benno called at eight.
"Come to the square," he said. "Now. You'll want to see this."
