Chapter 14: Her Way

I didn't go back to sleep.

I got up and pulled on my jeans and his white shirt off the floor, the one with the sauce on it.

The recorder was still on the nightstand.

I put it in my front pocket.

Then I walked past him to the bedroom door and stood in it.

He looked at me in the mirror over the dresser.

"I've done this before," I said. "In a kitchen. You had a foot on me then too."

"Move, Etta."

"No."

He turned around with the gun hanging from his hand, pointed at the carpet.

His eyes were red and dry and very calm.

That was the part that scared me.

"He put a pillow over my father's face," he said. "He sat at my table every Sunday for years after."

"I know. I heard it."

"Then move."

"Tell me what happens after," I said. "You drive to his house. You shoot him in his kitchen. Then what?"

"Then he's dead."

"Then you're arrested by lunch. Every cop in this city has wanted you for ten years, and you'll hand yourself to them."

"I have lawyers."
