Chapter 18: Above the Bakery
I didn't answer the text.
I blocked the number and put the phone face down on Fia's dashboard.
Fia read it upside down at a red light.
"Me," she said. "That's who. Tell him I said so."
Her apartment was two flights up over the bakery, at the top of a narrow wooden stair that groaned on every step.
Two small bedrooms, a kitchen the size of a closet, and a front room with tall windows over Magazine Street.
Everything smelled like anise, sugar and hot oil.
The twins got Fia's bed.
Fia took the pullout couch.
I took the floor beside the twins, because Coco asked, and because I wanted to.
"Is this our house now?" she whispered in the dark.
"For now."
"I like that it smells like cookies."
"Me too."
Ozzie, on the other side of her, was already writing by the streetlight through the blinds.
"What's that one?" I asked.
"Rules for the new place."
"What's rule one?"
"Nobody comes up the stairs without knocking."
By the second week we had a life.
At five every morning the ovens came on below us and the floor got warm under my feet.
