The Millvale lodge hall stood dark that night, with the paper lanterns still hanging from the harvest dinner.
Tomo's rooms were at the back, up an iron stair with snow on every tread.
I climbed it at nine with a covered dish of Teta's stuffed cabbage and her orders not to come back until it was empty.
He was sitting on the top step in his coat, with snow on his shoulders.
"How long have you been out here?" I said.
"Since the paper." He took the dish from me.
"The hall is hers," he said. "I grew up in that kitchen downstairs, and she folded it into her apron."
"I know."
"I didn't want you to find me in there, angry at a building," he said.
"I'd rather you were angry at a building than careful at me."
He looked up, and I held out my left hand in the porch light.
