Chapter 29: Gone
I turned the postcard over in Mama's front hall.
The picture was a desert at sunset, orange and purple, with a cactus in the middle.
On the back, in her small neat hand:
I used to park on her street on Sundays with the car window down. She sewed by the front window with it open in summer. That's how I knew the song.
I'm working. A dentist's office. I answer the phone and I give it back.
I'm not coming back to Chicago. I put her letter in a frame. Don't answer this.
L.
I read it standing in Nathaniel's flannel shirt, barefoot on the cold tile.
Then I read the first line again.
The street outside the door.
The front window where the plastic geranium sat.
All those summers, with the sewing machine going and Mama humming, and a car at the curb with its window down.
I'd never once looked at the cars.
Nathaniel came down the stairs in his jeans with his glasses in his hand.
"What is it?"
I handed it to him.
He read it with his glasses held up in front of his eyes like a magnifying glass, the way he did before coffee.
