Chapter 15: What It Lights
"Until what lights?" Ysolene said.
He spun around.
The scales along his arms flickered and went flat.
By the time he reached her at the window he was only a man in his drawers.
His hair blew in his face, his eyes were grey, and he was very pale.
"Ysolene. You'll catch your death."
"Until what lights, Valerian?"
"Come inside."
"I'm inside. I'm standing in the window. Answer me."
His hands took her shoulders, and she felt them shake.
"It's the quickening," he said. "At the new moon. When the heir's fire answers in the womb."
"And what does that have to do with not telling me?"
"There are things about it I can't say yet."
"Why not?"
"Because if I say them now," said Valerian, "I think I'll lose you."
The wind blew the curtain between them and fell back.
She stood there with her heart pounding.
She wanted to shake him.
She wanted to put her face in his chest and tell him it didn't matter.
"Ignatius told me to ask you what it shows," she said. "And how long you've known."
His mouth went hard.
"He would."
"Is it true? Have you known something about me?"
