Chapter 19: Taken

Ysolene's father went for the nearest rider with a fireplace poker.

He was fifty-three, he'd been in a cell for four months, and he caught the man a clean blow across the knee.

Two of them dragged him off the horse and threw him on the grass.

"Papa!"

"Go quietly, Ysolene!" he shouted, from under three men. "Don't give them the excuse!"

"I'll come back for you!"

"I know!"

They put her in a closed carriage with the shutters nailed down.

She fought them at the gate, kicking and clawing.

The captain said in a low voice that he did not wish to harm the heir, and she stopped, because she did not either.

The carriage rocked for two hours.

She sat in the dark with her hands over her belly and the child's fire hot as a coal against her palms.

When the door opened it was dusk.

She stood on a gravel drive in front of a grey manor house with a hundred windows.

A lawn ran down to a lake, and men in green livery were posted at every corner.

"Welcome to Greyhaven, Duchess," said Ignatius, from the steps.

He wore a velvet dressing gown, and he looked as rested as a man on holiday.
