Chapter 13: Mirelle's Truth
Ysmera put Fia to bed in the tower room that night, in the queen's own bed.
The girl cried herself to sleep over a candle that would not light.
Ysmera stood over her until her breathing slowed.
Then she went out onto the landing, because there was a woman standing at the top of the stair.
Mirelle had climbed all two hundred steps.
She wore the gray wool dress, and her hands were shaking so hard she held them against her ribs.
"I have no right to be here, Majesty."
"No, you have not. Say what you came to say."
"Not out here."
Ysmera led her into the small council room, shut the door, and lit one lamp.
She did not sit.
Mirelle stood in the middle of the floor and did not sit either.
"You saw the candle," Mirelle said.
"I saw a late ember. My aunt was fourteen."
"A late ember is a kind lie, Majesty. I would have told it too."
Ysmera's jaw tightened.
