Chapter 15: The Council Moves
The fastest rider in the Dragonguard had left for the border forts an hour before noon, with four words in his saddlebag.
Come home. Bring everyone.
Ysmera sat on the throne in her iron crown and watched the lords file into the Ember Hall.
The beacon still burned at the head of the room, and no one dared to stand near it.
Fia sat on the stool at the foot of the dais with her ankles crossed, because Ysmera had told her to.
She had washed her face and braided her hair.
Her hands were folded very still in her lap.
Elowen sat on the other side of the dais, beside her father's chair, and kept turning to look at her.
Aldous rose and let the hall settle.
He wore black today, the color of grief, and he had brought a clerk with a folded roll of paper.
"My lords," he said, in his warm, sad voice. "I take no joy in this."
"But the realm has seen a miracle, and in the same hour it has seen a shadow."
