Chapter 17: Under the Quilt
The first hard frost came that night, and the ondol under the floor could not keep up with it.
"Get the big quilt," said Seo-wan. "The one from the chest."
It was the winter quilt of the kings of Joseon, red silk on one side and thick cotton wadding inside.
It was as heavy as a sleeping child.
Tae-heon dragged it onto the bed with both arms.
She was already under the sheet in her chemise, with her loosened hair across the pillow.
He climbed in beside her, and the quilt came down over them both.
The lamp went out under his palm.
In the dark, she heard him breathe.
"Roll over," she said. "Face the wall."
"Doctor's orders?"
"Tonight they are. Don't move until I tell you."
He rolled over.
She fitted herself against his back, her breasts against his shoulder blades, her knee over his hip, her arm around his chest.
He was warm all the way down.
She breathed into the nape of his neck, and the skin there prickled.
"This is the order," she said. "We do nothing fast. Nothing at all."
"I can do that."
"You can try."
She kissed the knob at the top of his spine.
She kissed along the line of his shoulder, slowly, and felt him swallow.
Her hand slid down his stomach, over the flat plane of it, and found him already stiffening against her wrist.
She wrapped her fingers around him, loosely, and did not move them.
"Seo-wan."
"Hm."
"That's very cruel."
"It's medicine."
He laughed under his breath, and the sound traveled through her chest.
For a while they lay like that, her hand around him, his breath unsteady, the quilt heavy and warm over their shoulders.
The frost ticked on the paper screens.
"Tell me something," she said. "Not about the palace."
