Chapter 21: Debate
He walked out of the boardroom through the side door, past his mother, and didn't stop.
She didn't turn her head to watch him go.
In the parking lot, the room parent grabbed both my arms.
"He just told the whole town it's you or him."
"He's been telling the town that since October."
"No," she said. "Now they get to vote on it."
The candidate forum was set for Thursday, February fifth, in the Brookside gym.
Two candidates. Two podiums. One hour.
The local paper would be there, and Channel 4, and everyone who'd ever been in a group chat with me.
I practiced at Beau's kitchen table with Dottie as the moderator.
She wore her safety goggles and held a wooden spoon as a microphone.
"Question one," she said. "Mrs. Whitford, why should we vote for you?"
"Because I'll keep the books honest, and I'll get the third grade on the bus."
"Too boring. Question two. What's your favorite rock?"
"That's not a real question."
"It is in my election."
"Pink granite," I said. "From Gabe's grandmother's driveway."
