Chapter 20: The Plan

I held the page against my chest.

The fire ticked. Mam stood very still behind me.

I'd imagined this a hundred times since Rushford. Somebody from Starhold, reading Mam's words and finally understanding.

I'd never imagined it would be her, and that she'd say it like that, plain, without one excuse.

"You signed it," I said. "He lit it."

"That doesn't make me clean."

"No. It doesn't."

She nodded, once, as if I'd confirmed something she already knew.

"Then tell me what you want, Linnet. I'll hear it."

What I wanted was to be angry. I could feel it, hot and tired, under my ribs.

But she was eighty-one and she'd climbed the royal wing stairs at midnight to sit with me.

And Corvan had looked at her for twenty-six years and smiled.

"I want him to stand in front of everyone," I said. "And I want everyone to know."

"So do I," said the Queen. "Now I want it very much."

By morning there were five of us in the Queen's chamber.

The Queen in her chair.

Ilvar at the window.

Mam on a stool with her knitting.

Seren on the floor with every book she owned, looking like she hadn't slept in a week.
