Chapter 25: The Heartwood

The Queen didn't answer me right away.

She looked down at the captain, on his knees in the roots of my floor.

"Will you say that again?" she asked him. "In daylight. In front of the whole court."

He looked at the oak cage over my son for a long moment.

"Yes, Your Majesty," he said. "I've been waiting twenty-four years for somebody to ask me."

"Then we'll hold it where her mother died."

She turned to Ilvar.

"Lock him in my own tower. Not the Chancellor's cells. Your guards on the door, and nobody else's."

"And Corvan?"

"Corvan bows to me every morning. Let him keep bowing." She tapped her cane on the cracked boards. "She'll need some days on her feet. So will they."

I let the roots go.

They slid back into the oak and lay still, and the boards closed over them.

The cage over the cradle stayed exactly where it was.

Ilvar had to cut a door in it with his sword before I could feed the eldest in the morning.

For twelve days I learned how to feed three babies with two arms.

Mam said I'd work it out. Seren drew me diagrams with arrows.

Ilvar learned to change a wrapping cloth in the dark, and swore at it in words I'd never heard.

"Old Star Elvish," he said. "It's very rude."

"Teach me."

"Absolutely not. You'll use it in council."
