Chapter 23: Clause Twelve

Brant found me on the rocks at the edge of the Point, an hour after the moon came back.

The crowds had thinned.

The Council was dealing with Dorothea in a tent.

The pack had lit a bonfire on the grass for no reason except that wolves do that.

I sat on a boulder with Benedict's coat around my shoulders and my bare wrist in my lap.

It looked wrong without the crescent.

It looked like mine.

Brant sat down beside me, close enough that our shoulders touched.

"It went somewhere," he said. "I felt it."

"Where?"

"Into her. Like a door opening in another room." He rubbed his chest. "It's strange. It doesn't hurt."

"And?"

"And what's left."

I made myself look at him.

His gold eyes had faded to hazel, tired and steady.

"I still want you," Brant said. "I'd like you to know that. It didn't go with the moon. It's mine, like I said it would be, and it's staying."

"Brant..."

"And I'm not going to ask." He smiled, a little crookedly. "You told me not to. You were right. If you said yes now, it'd be because you were tired, and I was nice, and the dog was there."
