Chapter 16: The Library Floor
The library of the Thorn Court is a long room cut into the root-wall.
It has a ladder on a rail and a smell of dust and old paper.
I got there before the lamps, and I did four things.
I hung my yellow raincoat on the outside handle, where the whole Hills would know it.
I carried in an armful of winter cloaks from the alcove off the gallery.
I threw the bolt.
Then I said, out loud, to the shelves, "This door is closed to my own use."
Emrys came in through the narrow door behind the maps, and I bolted that one behind him.
He stopped when he saw the cloaks piled under the ladder.
"That's a very large bed," he said.
"It's a carpet. It's a carpet with a great deal of fur on it."
"I like the carpet."
"He'll come," I said. "Maybe in an hour, maybe in five minutes."
"He'll bring witnesses, because he needs an audience for his triumphs."
"And you want to be found."
"I want him to find exactly what Clause Four doesn't say."
He crossed the floor, and his hands came up to my face.
"I'd have done it without the audience," he said. "I want you to know that."
