Chapter 22: Sabrina

Sabrina walked into the middle of the ring with the phone still raised.

Her hands shook so hard the picture jumped.

"I didn't know," she said. "Please, everyone. I was a kid when he brought me home. He told me what to say. I was scared of him too."

The elders watched her without a word.

"I have texts," she said. "I can show you. He ran everything, and I'm the one who got hurt."

She held out the screen to the grey-cropped elder, who did not take it.

"Read them," I said.

Sabrina's eyes came to me, big and wet.

"Willa, you know what he's like. You know."

"I know what you're like."

I stepped closer, and she flinched.

"You said you were scared of him," I said. "Read the one from last Thursday."

"I don't remember."

"The one at the clinic. Read it out."

She shook her head.

The second elder reached over and took the phone from her hand.

She scrolled with her thumb, and then she read aloud in a flat voice.

"From Conrad, ten minutes before the clinic: She'll be in the lobby at two. Bring the camera. From Sabrina: On it. I'll make her look unhinged. From Conrad: Good girl."

Nobody breathed.

"From Sabrina, three weeks ago," the elder went on. "Can we stop paying for her pills so she cracks sooner? She's getting too healthy."

A hiss went round the circle.
