Chapter 19: The Cab
Nels's POV
I drove, because Emmett's hands were not steady enough to be trusted with a truck, and because I wanted to.
Nine miles out of Big Timber she put her hand on my knee.
"Pull over," Jess said.
"We're half an hour from home."
"Nels," she said.
"What's the matter?"
"I've just stood in front of the whole valley and said yes, all three, into a microphone."
She was breathing hard.
"I'm shaking. I need you to pull over."
Dutch leaned forward from the back seat.
"There's a gravel turnout at the next bend," he said.
"By the river."
"Thank you, Dutch," she said.
"Yes, honey."
I put on the signal for nobody and swung off the road.
The turnout was a half-moon of gravel above the Boulder, shaded by cottonwoods, with a rusted sign about fishing access.
I cut the engine.
In the silence I could hear the river and the tick of the hood.
Nobody in the truck said a word.
Then Emmett opened his door.
"Dutch," he said.
"Let's look at the water."
"I'd like to look at the water," Dutch said gravely, and climbed out after him.
The doors shut with two soft thumps.
Through the windshield I watched the two of them walk down the bank toward the river.
Their hands were in their pockets, and their backs were to the truck.
Dutch said something to Emmett.
Emmett laughed, short, and shook his head.
"You told them," I said.
"I told them with my eyes."
"You've got a fine pair of eyes," I said.
"Nels. Shut up."
She climbed over the console.
She did it without any grace at all, one boot catching on the gearshift, one knee in my ribs.
Then she was in my lap with her back to the steering wheel and her face a hand's width from mine.
