Chapter 17: The Tub
The tub stood in front of the wood stove, a white claw-foot beast with the enamel worn grey at the rim.
Steam hung over it in a slow cloud.
Eero had lit candles on the windowsill and the chair, and the room was gold and wet and warm.
I stood in the doorway in my county fleece and my work boots, with a night of other people's emergencies still stuck to me.
"Take your boots off," he said.
"No."
He was already in the water.
He sat with his back against the tall end, long legs hooked over the other rim, his arms laid along the sides.
The water came up to the top of his chest, and his shaved head shone in the candlelight.
"No?" he said.
"You don't give the orders in here."
His eyes went dark and bright.
"All right," he said. "Give them."
"Hands on the rim."
He put them on the rim.
"Stay."
I undressed in front of him, slowly, in the heat.
The fleece first, then the shirt, then the jeans, folding nothing, leaving everything in a pile on the floor.
When I was bare I stepped up on the little stool and then over the rim.
The hot water took my ankles, my knees, my thighs.
I did not sit.
I stood over him with one foot on each side of his hips and looked down.
"You've been good," I said.
"I've been waiting."
"Good. Now shut up and open your mouth."
His throat moved.
I turned and put my hands on the high end of the tub above his head.
I lowered myself to my knees on either side of his face, with the taps cold against my belly.
