Chapter 18: The Messages

Wade's father's house was in Edina, a long low brick thing with a basketball hoop over the garage.

Wade was on the porch steps when we pulled up at 7:20 in the morning.

"Dad's in Florida until Thursday," he said.

"Then let's not be long."

We went in through the front hall.

The guest room was at the end of a hallway with pictures of Wade and Jenna as kids.

Same dark hair. Same teeth.

The desk was by the window, an old oak thing with a chair that didn't match.

Top right drawer.

Wade opened it and stepped back.

Inside was a phone in a leather case and a charger coiled around it.

Logan picked it up and held the power button.

It came on. No lock code.

The messages were all there.

I sat down at the desk and scrolled.

The first thread was her to the coordinator, dated the morning after the training-room meeting.

Dana Kline is sleeping with her patient. I have witnesses.

The second was to a friend. I'm going to get her out. Watch.

The third was the one I stopped on.

Sent to the coordinator three days before the first complaint.

I saw her go into the training room with him and shut the door behind her.

I stopped reading.

"She wrote that," Logan said.

"She wrote that three days before she ever walked in."

I kept scrolling.

There was a thread with the athletic director's assistant asking about the complaint procedure.

There was a thread where she asked a friend to take the photograph of my log page.

There was a thread where she talked about the file.

I've got his scans. If he doesn't back off I'll post them.

Logan read it over my shoulder.

He didn't say anything.

Wade stood in the doorway with his arms crossed.

"There's more," he said.

"Where."

"Photos."

I opened the camera roll.

Screenshots of my email draft. Screenshots of my log. Screenshots of the placement drive folder.

One photo of the training room door from the hallway, closed.

It wasn't closed. It sticks. You can see the light coming through the gap in the bottom corner.
