Chapter 31: The Frozen Four

The rink in Denver holds eighteen thousand and it was full.

I worked the training room from noon.

Tape, ice, water, a freshman with a bloody lip, a senior with a bad shoulder.

Logan was on the ice for warmups in a jacket and a helmet, backing up the starter.

He took shots for ten minutes and stopped every one and skated off without a limp.

The coach watched him the whole time and said nothing.

We won the semifinal 3-1 on Thursday.

The starter was sharp and the freshman goalie never got off the bench.

Logan sat third from the left with his pads on and his helmet in his lap.

Friday morning I got a call from the coordinator.

"Ms. Kline. Do you have ten minutes."

"I'm in a hotel lobby."

"Then this is a good time."

She told me the department had a line on a full-time assistant position.

Athletic training, men's hockey, starting in August.

"I'm not licensed yet," I said.

"You will be. You finish in May."

"I finish in May and I take the exam in June."

"Then it starts in August on a provisional license and converts in September."

I stood in the hotel lobby with the phone against my ear.
