Chapter 15: Chains

"No," said Luan.

Cangjue's jaw tightened.

"Hear me. You would be a goddess again. Do you know what that is worth?"

"No."

"I burned forty thousand people. The Marshal is not wrong about that."

"He's not wrong about that," she said. "He's wrong about everything else."

She took his wrist.

His skin was freezing from the snow, and under it his pulse beat, strong and quick and angry.

"Walk," she said.

"Luan."

"Walk with me, or I will pull the thread and drag you."

He stared at her.

Then something moved at the corner of his mouth, not quite a smile.

"I would like to see that," he said.

"Walk."

He walked.

She led him up the hundred and four steps, past the guards, who looked at the ceiling.

She led him into the Hall of Chains and shut the door and shot the bolt.

Nine iron chains hung from the black beams overhead, as thick as her wrist, each with a heavy cuff at the end.

She had looked at them every night she had spent in this room.

She had never asked what they were for.

"Heaven forged them," he said. "To hold me. They never closed."

"They'll close today."

She took the first cuff down.

It was cold and heavy in her hands, and she opened it with a twist.

"Hands up."

He raised his arms.

She locked a cuff around each wrist, and the chains took the weight and pulled him up on his toes with his arms stretched wide.

The iron rang softly.
