Chapter 16: The Gala
Jonas was on his feet before I could speak.
"Stay here," he breathed.
"No."
I was dressed in the dark in under a minute, and the little pistol was in my hand.
We went down the stairs together, and I did not use the rail.
Nineteen steps, and I stepped over the creaking third one with Jonas a pace behind me.
The house was dead quiet.
At the bottom I smelled cold garden air and cigarette smoke.
The study door was open, and the police tape had been cut.
Someone was breathing inside, short and careful, and a small metal sound ticked on a dial.
He was at my father's safe.
"The combination is my mother's birthday," I said.
"Four, nineteen, eighty-eight."
"You'd have gotten there in an hour."
The ticking stopped.
Jonas crossed the room in three steps, and I heard a body hit the desk and a chair go over.
