Chapter 14: The Lake Cottage
Joanne found me at the bottom of the hill, sitting on the stone gatepost with the blanket in my lap.
She stopped her gray station wagon in the road and left the engine running.
She got out in her good dinner shoes and did not say a word.
She looked at the bundle in my arms, and at my face, and she opened the passenger door.
We drove for twenty minutes through hills I had only ever seen from the kitchen window.
"Don't tell me anything tonight," she said at last. "I want to give you somewhere to be first."
She turned onto a narrow road that ran down through the trees.
Water showed between them, flat and black, with a few lights on the far shore.
"Lake Waramaug," she said.
I looked at the dashboard clock.
It was fifteen miles from the Thornley gate.
Fifteen miles.
I had scrubbed another woman's floors for twenty-four years, fifteen miles from the room where I was born to be someone else.
