Chapter 21: No Deal
Henrik told me in the elevator.
"No," he said.
The elevator was glass and slow.
It carried us up toward the box suites while the whole dark ice sheet fell away beneath us.
"You haven't heard what I'm going to say."
"I heard 'no.'"
"It's the right one." He turned to face me. "I wanted you to hear it before anyone else."
"Henrik, you've wanted this since you were eleven."
"I've wanted it since I was eleven," he said. "I've wanted you for two years."
"I'd pick you."
I opened my mouth, and nothing came.
The doors slid apart on a room full of donors.
The box suite was long and warm, with wide windows over the ice.
Forty people in good clothes stood around a bar with silver trays, holding glasses.
Both teams stood in clumps along the wall in their dress shirts, uneasy as cats at a wedding.
Trent was there, with his father at his shoulder, a big silver-haired man with a golf tan and a hand on his son's neck.
I knew that hand.
Trent met my eyes across the room and smiled.
Prescott tapped a glass.
"Friends," he said. "Thank you for coming. It's an important week for Halden."
He talked for four minutes about tradition.
