Chapter 12: The Binder
On Monday morning the printer on the second floor jammed, and I went to fix it.
I was the only person in the building who knew how.
A kitchen teaches you to fix jammed machines with a butter knife.
I pulled out a crumpled sheet and then a second one.
Under the tray, a black binder had been left behind with a clear plastic cover.
The label on the spine said, "CUP RUN IMAGE PLAN."
I should have put it back.
I opened it.
The first page was a photo schedule, with names and times.
Every photograph had a small red note.
"Team dinner: crop D. out." "Locker room celebration: D. not present." "Ice presentation: D. not present."
D. was me.
I turned the page.
The second sheet was a flight list for the finals, with my name crossed out in the same red ink.
The third was a map of the parade route, from the arena down Main Street to the waterfront.
