Chapter 13: Voicemail

I called Ohio back at four o'clock, from the dry storage room with the door shut.

I sat on an upturned bucket between the flour and the rice.

Doran sat outside the door on a milk crate, because I had asked him to be near and to keep his mouth closed.

I could hear his boots shift against the concrete.

The brand director picked up on the first ring.

"Ms. Prendergast," she said, sounding relieved. "I didn't think you would call."

"I got your message this morning. I got the other two today as well."

"Today? I left the first one in August."

"I know. I'm sorry. I only found out today that you left it."

She was quiet for a moment.

"Then I think I know who didn't tell you," she said.

"I think you do."

She didn't say Delphine's name, and neither did I.

"Let me tell you why I keep calling," she said. "Can I do that?"

"Please."

"Someone filmed you in your mother's diner, in July."
