Chapter 14: Conference Final

The hotel in Dallas gave the Blizzard cold chicken in plastic boxes.

Forty hockey players stood in the ballroom and poked at it with plastic forks.

I stood at the back with my arms crossed, because the hotel manager had shown me the league order and the locked kitchen door.

We had lost game one that afternoon, 4 to 1, and nobody had the energy to be mad about lunch.

Pavel put down his box and clapped his hands twice.

"Everybody," he said. "Tomorrow at one o'clock you come to my house."

"What house?" said Hank.

"The one I rented. I rent a house in every city. It has a six burner stove and a patio."

"Why would you rent a house in every city?"

"Because I am a goalie," Pavel said, with dignity. "I need somewhere to be alone with my thoughts and my sausages."

The room started to laugh, and the laugh got bigger.

I covered my mouth, and I was crying a little behind my hand.

The house was two miles from the hotel, a white brick ranch with a long kitchen island.

I cooked the pregame meal there for forty-one people.

There was a pot of chili with brisket, a tray of cornbread, and a hotel pan of rice.

Pavel washed pans in an apron that said KISS THE GOALIE and sang in Czech.
