Chapter 15: Three-One

The locker room after game four sounded like a building after a fire.

Equipment was on the floor and nobody was talking, until a defenseman threw his glove at the wall.

"Five goals," he said, to the room. "Five. Is anybody going to say it?"

Pavel stood up in his pads with his shaggy hair plastered to his face.

"Say what? Say that I am bad?"

"I'm saying you left the door open all night."

"And you gave me nothing to stop except open doors!"

Both of them were shouting, and then six other men were shouting.

Hank Doyle sat on a bench with his whistle in his fist and said nothing.

Doran sat in his stall with his skates on.

He stared at the floor.

I pushed through the door with my chef's coat on and my ladle in my hand.

I walked to the middle of the room, where the logo was painted on the carpet.

I hit the ladle on the metal bench.

The sound went off.

"Sit down," I said.

Forty hockey players stopped.

"Sit down. All of you. Hank, you too."

"I'm already sitting," said Hank.

"Good."

They sat. A rookie sat on the floor.

"I've seen you eat," I said.

"I've seen what a loss does. It makes you stand around in your wet socks and say things you can't take back."
