Chapter 22: The Face

The brand director climbed onto the front of the float without waiting for an invitation.

Her green suit was creased from the crowd, and she held the banner with both hands like a flag.

"I'm sorry," she said, to Doran, to me, and to half a million strangers. "I know this is your parade."

"Please," said Doran. "Go ahead."

He handed her the microphone.

"My name doesn't matter," she said.

"I work for Ironhearth Cookware in Ohio."

"We have made cast iron for a hundred and twelve years."

"I didn't come to ask the team. I came to ask her."

The crowd made a low, ugly noise.

Delphine took one step toward the float.

"This is an unauthorized address," she said, loudly. "Ma'am, you have no right to speak at a team event."

"I have a banner contract with the Buffalo Blizzard," said the brand director, without turning her head.

"Section nine says I may display it on the lead float. I'm displaying it."

Delphine's mouth opened and closed.

Pavel, wearing her headset, pointed at her and made a small clicking noise with his tongue.
