Chapter 22: The Bottle

Mason's POV

The general manager called me at eight, and I put him on speaker so Lila could hear.

"Doyle," he said. "I owe you an apology for the booster business, and I owe you a better offer. The owner read that email. He's embarrassed. He wants you in April, with a two-year deal and a clause that lets you finish your degree."

I looked at Lila, who sat cross-legged on my bed with my sweatshirt pulled over her knees.

"That's what you came to say?" I asked.

"There's more, but I'd rather say it after your final. Win something first." He paused. "How's the girl?"

"She's right here."

"Hello, Lila," he said, and she waved at the phone.

When he hung up, I said it out loud, before she could ask.

"It's a good offer. I'm not answering until after the final. I'm telling you first."

"I know." She nudged my knee with her foot. "You're so proud of yourself."

"I am a little."

The final was the following Saturday, in our own arena, against the team that had beaten us twice that year.

I did not sleep the night before.

I lay on my back and listened to Nate snore and thought about nothing, on purpose, because I'd learned to do that.

By game time, the arena was a wall of noise.

We went into the third period down by one.

Our line was tired. I had a cut over my eyebrow where the old scar was.
