Chapter 24: Cafeteria, Tuesday Again
The banquet was in the same ballroom at the Hartwell Inn, with the same white tablecloths and the same shrimp tower.
This time I wore the green dress because I wanted to, and Mason had pinned a white rose corsage to my wrist with hands that were almost steady.
"Table one," the new booster president said, with a smile that actually reached her eyes. "Captain Doyle and guest, front and center."
Tori and Nate sat on my left. Coach sat on my right, in a tie he'd clearly borrowed.
Across the room, I saw Courtney's father at a far table, alone, with a glass of water.
He nodded at Mason once, stiffly.
Courtney was not there.
The booster club had voted her out on Monday, and I found I didn't think about her at all.
After the dinner, the athletic director tapped the microphone.
"We have a few words from our captain."
The ballroom applauded, and Mason stood.
He walked to the stage and put both hands on the podium.
He looked at his index card for a long time.
Then he put the card in his pocket.
"I wrote a speech," he said. "It was about teamwork. It was very good. I'm not going to give it."
Laughter ran through the tables.
"I'm going to tell you something I've never said in public, because a smart person taught me to say things out loud first."
Tori grabbed my hand under the tablecloth.
"For a year and a half, I've been thinking about one person every single day. I thought about her on the bus. I thought about her in the middle of faceoffs. I thought about her so hard, and so often, that I started to think she could hear me."
