Chapter 17: Grandfather
I read the petition three times standing at the stove.
The onions burned.
My father's lawyers said he was Lulu's only living grandfather.
That he'd been "kept from her" by her mother's "instability".
That he wanted one weekend a month, in Seattle, and two weeks every summer.
Two weeks every summer, in the house I'd left with one suitcase.
The hearing was in eleven days.
Johnny drove me up I-5 in his black truck on the off day.
Stevie kept Lulu home and taught her to tape a hockey stick, because Lulu had asked what Grandpa wanted and Stevie said "a distraction".
Johnny didn't turn on the radio for three hours.
Somewhere past Olympia he put his hand on the console, palm up.
I put mine in it.
He didn't say anything about it. He just drove one-handed the rest of the way.
The family courtroom in Seattle was small and too warm, with wood paneling and a box of tissues on every table.
My father was already there.
Same charcoal suit. Same silver hair. Two lawyers, both in navy.
