Chapter 26: City Hall
On May sixth the line for City Hall started at the corner of Fourth Avenue at seven in the morning.
By nine it went around the block.
Dads in old jerseys. Kids in clinic helmets. The old men from the old arena, in folding chairs.
The high school brass band was on the steps, playing the goal horn song, badly, on purpose.
Stevie walked me through it with one hand on my back.
"You're fine," she said. "Your face is green, but you're fine. Eat this."
She handed me a protein bar. I ate it on the steps of City Hall.
The council chamber held two hundred. There were three hundred people in it.
The players stood along the back wall in suits, their arms crossed.
Johnny stood with them, his shoulder healed, his tie crooked.
Lulu sat in the front row of the gallery on Stevie's lap, in her purple mask.
I'd said she could come if she was quiet.
At the front, on a raised wooden dais, sat the mayor and the four council members.
At a table to their left sat my father, with three lawyers.
